Support the YWCA
The past year has been an exciting one for the YWCA of Central Maine, and we would like to bring you up to date on some of the wonderful things that are happening. We continue to provide quality pre-school, pre-k and after-school care. The swimming pool (with lessons, open swims, swim team competitions, aqua-yoga, water fitness, therapeutic swim and more) continues to be a pillar of service that the YWCA provides to Lewiston/Auburn and the surrounding communities.
Building upon the strong foundation of our past, we have made a recommitment to offering programs based on our two hallmarks: eliminating racism and empowering women. Twelve new classes in these areas began this fall with new programs coming in winter. The YWCA of Central Maine has also made smart collaborations with Fiddlehead Center for the Arts, Healthy Androscoggin, Girls on the Run (a healthy lifestyle/running program for girls), Teaching Tolerance; Maine Women’s Fund, Central Maine Medical Center, the Lewiston School System, and other YWCAs nation-wide.
As involved and committed community members, we hope you will share our belief in the importance of the work being done at our YWCA. As in the past, the YWCA is continuing to respond to the needs of children, women, and families. We need your financial support to continue this much needed work. The current economy has had a significant impact in enrollment in our childcare and swim programs. Parents have had to make difficult choices that are painful for them and their children. Some children, due to their parents’ workload being cut, are only attending pre-school 2-3 days a week instead of 5. Children, as young as 7 years old, are going home to an empty house rather than attending after-school care. Fewer families can afford the luxury of swim lessons, an important life skill. Requests for scholarship help for swim team members have increased five-fold.
Please join the YW or renew your membership and consider providing additional support to allow our important work to continue.
